Contaminations that enter electrical devices reduce the useful life and eventually cause the entire device to fail. Dust can be mentioned among these pollutions; which can be the source of many damages by entering the electrical enclosure. Dust can collect in sockets, ports or electrical gaps, and if the dust is more than allowed, it can cause heating of circuits and conduction.

Moisture is another thing that can have negative effects on electrical equipment. Getting wet is another reason that disables electrical equipment, and chemicals, especially cleaners, can have corrosive and destructive effects on electrical equipment.

In this article, we would like to discuss the resistance level of electrical devices against the penetration of foreign bodies, or in other words, the degree of protection (IP) and learn more about its concepts.

What is the degree of IP protection?

The body of electrical devices is responsible for protecting the parts inside it and prevents the entry of foreign objects or particles and moisture into the device. This degree of protection is known as (Ingress Protection) IP.

IP indicates the degree to which the resistance of the device against the penetration of dust and moisture can be ensured.

What does the degree of IP protection specify?

  1. The degree of protection of people against contact with live and moving parts
  2. Protection of the equipment inside the part against the penetration of foreign objects and dust
  3. Protection of the equipment inside the part against the penetration of liquids and moisture into it

According to the National Association of Electrical Manufacturers, the degree of protection or IP code is a term in the IEC60529 standard, based on which electrical equipment enclosures with standard codes with two letters IP next to two digits, in terms of penetration against external factors are divided.

The first digit, which is between 0 and 6, specifies the level of protection against foreign hard objects and the protection of people. The second digit is between 0 and 8 and specifies the level of protection against water penetration. The higher these numbers are, the higher the level of protection.

Degree of protection of electrical equipment IPXX against penetration of water and foreign bodies

The type and level of protection created by the cover of the device according to the first digit of the degree of protection:

  • Degree of protection IP0X: no special protection.
  • IP1X degree of protection: in this case, protection is provided for large parts of the human body, such as the hand, that is, the hand is not inserted into the equipment, but it is not protected against intentional contact. In fact, protection is achieved for objects with a diameter of more than 50 mm.
  • IP2X protection level: In this case, the device cover is protected for fingers or objects with a maximum length of 80 mm and hard objects with a diameter of more than 12 mm. That is, it can be said that a screwdriver is inserted.
  • IP3X degree of protection: in this case, protection is provided for tools, wires, etc. with a diameter or thickness of more than 2.5 mm and hard objects with a diameter of more than 2.5 mm.
  • IP4X degree of protection: in this case, the cover of the device provides protection for wires or belts with a thickness of more than 1 mm and hard objects with a diameter of more than 1.5 mm.
  • IP5X degree of protection: in this type of equipment, the complete penetration of dust into the device is not prevented; But dust does not enter to the extent that it interferes with the operation of the device.
  • IP6X degree of protection: in this case, no dust penetrates into the equipment, and in other words, the equipment with IP6X is impervious to dust.
IPXX protection degree table

The type and degree of protection created by the cover of the device according to the second digit of the degree of protection:

  • IPX0 degree of protection: in this case, no special protection is provided.
  • IPX1 degree of protection: in this case, water dripping vertically does not disturb the equipment and does not cause harmful effects. Like it is on the ceiling device.
  • IPX2 degree of protection: in this case, vertical drops of water on the coating with a deviation angle of up to 15 degrees will not have a harmful effect.
  • IPX3 degree of protection: in this case, the device is not harmed against water splashing up to an angle of 60 degrees from the vertical position.
  • IPX4 degree of protection: In this type of protection, which is one of the most widely used degrees of protection in equipment, water released from any side does not have a harmful effect on the cover of the device. In other words, equipment with IPX4 is protected against water leakage.
  • IPX5 degree of protection: this type of protection is also one of the most widely used degrees of equipment protection. In this case, which in the term is protected against the eruption of water or water under pressure; The water thrown by the water dispenser from any side will not have a destructive effect on the cover of the device.
  • IPX6 degree of protection: in this type of protection, it provides protection against sea waves. This means that water generated by stormy sea waves or strong water jets should not enter the device in a harmful manner.
  • IPX7 degree of protection: This mode is known as equipment protected against the effects of immersion in water. The cover of the device with this degree of protection should not be able to penetrate water to a harmful extent when immersed in water under certain conditions of pressure and time.
  • IPX8 degree of protection: Equipment with IPX8 degree of protection is protected against immersion under water. In fact, in this case, the equipment must be sealed in an impenetrable manner. Of course, in certain types of equipment with this degree of protection, it is possible for water to penetrate, but it does not have a destructive effect.

Degree of protection of flexible pipe sealing connector

The degree of protection of the Flexible conduit Connector is very important due to the high voltage wire and cable passing through it. Therefore, we at the Electro Persian Sepahan production group have made every effort to provide high-quality glands with a high degree of protection.

The degree of protection of Electro Persian Sepahan Flexible conduit connector is IP66.
